The seller's playbook for U.S. TikTok Shop in 2026
14 min read · Updated 2026-08-15
TikTok Shop moved more than $30B in U.S. GMV last year and is still one of the fastest-growing consumer sales channels on the internet. The best sellers aren't the ones with the biggest ad budgets — they're the ones with the best product-research process. This guide walks through the seller-center setup, the daily research loop, and the mistakes that quietly kill new stores in their first 60 days.
Who can sell on U.S. TikTok Shop
As of 2026, U.S. TikTok Shop is open to any seller with a U.S. LLC or C-corp, a U.S. business bank account, and a U.S. shipping origin. You’ll need an EIN and a phone number tied to the business, but you don’t need an existing TikTok following to sell — the creator affiliate program covers discovery for you.
Individual sellers (no LLC) can also list, but with reduced payout and slightly lower search placement. If you’re going to run this as a business, the LLC route is worth the ~$150 filing cost.
Setting up Seller Center
Head to seller-us.tiktok.com and register. You’ll upload EIN documents, connect a Payoneer or U.S. bank account, and list your first product. TikTok reviews the seller application within 24–72 hours in 2026 (down from 5–7 days last year).
- Product listing — 3 to 9 images, one main video, a specification table, and the compliance category (FDA, FCC, CPSC — pick carefully; wrong pick = delisting).
- Fulfillment mode — Fulfilled by Seller (FBS) is the default. Fulfilled by TikTok (FBT) is available but only unlocks after ~$50k in monthly GMV in most categories.
- Creator affiliate — enable it from day one, set a 10–20% commission, and open the plan to all creators. This is where 60–80% of new-seller GMV comes from.
The daily research routine
The sellers who do $50k+/month all run some version of the same 15-minute daily loop:
- Check the trending leaderboard for products with 24-hour velocity above +30% that aren’t in your catalog.
- Check the top movers for absolute sold-count deltas — these are the products currently being pushed by a creator.
- Scan your own listings for velocity drops. A drop of >20% day-over-day usually means a creator video that was carrying traffic has stalled — re-seed a new one.
- Check the category leaderboard for shifts in hot-tier count. A category jumping from 12 to 24 hot products in a week is a strong signal.
- Review supplier match confidence on any new product you’re considering. If TrendVy hasn’t already surfaced an Alibaba match with score > 0.7, the sourcing risk is meaningfully higher.
Fees, margins, and the real math
TikTok Shop takes a 5% commission (going up to 8% in a few categories in 2026), plus a 2.9% + $0.30 payment processing fee. Add ~$3–8 in fulfillment cost per unit (depending on weight and packaging), plus 10–20% to the creator via the affiliate program, and you need a gross margin of at least 55–60% on landed cost to make the math work at scale.
This is why sourcing matters so much: a product where your Alibaba cost is 15% of the retail price gives you a workable 40% net margin. A product where your Alibaba cost is 40% of retail is underwater the moment you hit your first ad.
The five mistakes that kill new stores in 60 days
- Listing without a supplier lined up. The moment your product hits, you have 3–5 days to fulfill or your seller rating collapses. Have a supplier lined up, not "I’ll figure it out."
- Skipping the creator affiliate program. Ads-only stores on TikTok Shop have terrible unit economics. Affiliates are how the platform actually works.
- Ignoring refund rate. Above 5% refund rate and TikTok starts suppressing your listings. Above 8% and they delist. Cheap product, correct sizing, honest photos.
- Copying the top-1 winner. By the time a product is #1, the supplier chain is saturated and your MOQ is going to be terrible. Copy #10–30 winners in the same category instead.
- Manual research. Doing this without a data tool means you find winners weeks after they broke out. That’s the entire pitch of a product like TrendVy.
Next steps
Once your Seller Center is live and you’ve enabled the creator affiliate program, the whole game is research + sourcing. See how to find winning TikTok Shop products and the Alibaba supplier sourcing guide for the two loops that actually move revenue.
