TikTok Shop vs Shopify: pick the right rails for your product
10 min read · Updated 2026-08-10
Shopify gives you infinite control and zero built-in discovery. TikTok Shop gives you built-in discovery and zero control. The right answer isn't universal — it's a function of your product's price band, gross margin, refund rate, and whether your buyer is impulsive or considered. This guide gives you the framework to pick.
The 30-second answer
If your product is under $50, visually demonstrable in a 15-second video, and appeals to impulse buyers: TikTok Shop wins by a lot. If your product is over $100, needs education before purchase, or has a repeat-purchase model (subscriptions, consumables where the customer needs a login): Shopify wins by a lot. Everything in between is the interesting case, and that’s what the rest of this guide is about.
Discovery model
Shopify has no built-in discovery — every visitor either comes from an ad you paid for, an SEO page you ranked, or a link from somewhere else. TikTok Shop has enormous built-in discovery through the For You feed, creator affiliate videos, and TikTok search. This is the single biggest difference. On day one, a new TikTok Shop store gets thousands of eyeballs on any product that creators pick up. A new Shopify store gets zero.
Fees
- Shopify: $39–$299/month platform fee + 2.9% + 30¢ per transaction. No commission on sales themselves.
- TikTok Shop: 5–8% commission + 2.9% + 30¢ per transaction. No monthly fee. Plus 10–20% to creators via affiliate.
At $100k/month in GMV, Shopify costs ~$3,200/month all-in. TikTok Shop costs ~$14,000–$26,000/month all-in. TikTok is more expensive on paper, but the discovery cost is essentially bundled into the fee — on Shopify you’re paying that separately in ads.
Ad model
On Shopify you drive traffic yourself, usually via Meta ads. Cost per acquisition sits between $18 and $60 depending on category. On TikTok Shop, ~60% of revenue for a well-run store comes from the creator affiliate program — where you pay 10–20% commission only on sales that convert. This is dramatically better economics for products under $50.
Refund rate + customer trust
TikTok Shop’s buyer protection is aggressive — refunds are often granted before the seller even sees the request. Refund rates on TikTok Shop tend to run 4–8% depending on category, vs 1–3% for a comparable Shopify store. This matters a lot at scale.
The right pick by product profile
- Impulse-buy, video-friendly, under $50, no subscription: TikTok Shop. Full stop.
- Considered purchase, over $100, benefits from comparison: Shopify.
- Subscription / repeat purchase: Shopify. TikTok Shop doesn’t handle account-linked repeat purchase well yet.
- Brand-focused DTC: Shopify as primary, TikTok Shop as an acquisition channel that redirects to your Shopify.
- Cheap-and-cheerful arbitrage: TikTok Shop. This is what it’s built for.
The dual-channel play
Most serious sellers in 2026 run both. TikTok Shop for the top-of-funnel discovery and the impulse conversion; Shopify for the brand storefront, subscription products, and returning customer LTV. TrendVy’s research tools work for both — the product-velocity signals are useful whether you’re listing on TikTok Shop or building a Shopify collection around a trending category.
